Conformity

Romans 8: 29 –“For those whom He foreknew-of whom He was aware and loved beforehand-He also destined from the beginning…to be conformed into the image of His Son.”

As a believer, part of your destiny is to be shaped into the image of Jesus, to grow and mature until you look just like Him. The Holy Spirit began that process the moment you were born again. You were super naturally changed on the inside – instantly. How successful you are in allowing this change to continue and to effect how you live is mostly up to you. We grow up spiritually just like we grow up physically. Diet and exercise! Our intake always effects our output. I can still remember one day about six months after coming to Christ, while standing around with several of my colleagues that a person drove by and did something to us that was unpleasing. Without thinking some very colorful exclamations came out of my mouth. Just a few months earlier that was normal and acceptable. And because everyone knew who I had become, you could hear a pin drop. But because I had been feeding on the Word of God immediately the Holy Spirit in me convicted me of this violation of spirit. The instant reaction I had was to ask Jesus and my colleagues to forgive me. Which they gladly did. Because of becoming more like Christ, I am happy to say, that day was the last time those type of words have come out of my mouth.

Is there anything that we can do to speed up this growth process? By spending more time pursuing the things of the Spirit than you do pursuing the things of the flesh will cause your growth to accelerate. “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds on what the flesh wants; but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit”(Romans 8:5). Become dedicated to the Word of God and make worship and prayer a daily priority. The God of the universe wants to spend time with you, to love on you and share His heart with you. This is why He called you into a relationship with Himself. You must be willing to take the time to pull away from the busy things of life and get alone with God. As you do, He will guide you, teach you and share His heart with you.

Become dedicated to the Word of God.

Have you ever noticed that if you spend time around people who have strong personalities, you will automatically be affected by them? The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 11:1 -“You should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” This Word is so amazing and relevant for us when you see the context. Paul did not have the advantage that the other apostles had by knowing Jesus in the flesh. He did not minister with Jesus as the other apostles did. But after his conversion, he pursued Jesus with his whole heart. And because of this pursuit, he gained the heart of Christ, to the point of CONFORMITY to Him. When you spend time with strong people, you’ll find yourself doing the things they do. Right or wrong. Their mannerisms will rub off on you. You can’t help it. They just influence you, especially if they are people you respect and admire. It’s the same for us when we spend time with God, His strengths become ours. By spending time with God through His Word, worship, and prayer His ways will become yours.

His strengths become ours.

The same thing is true in your relationship with God. If you spend enough time with Him, He’s going to rub off on you and His ways will become your ways. So, make yourself available to Him by praying, worshiping and loving Him. Daily spend time in His Word and get around other people, who love His Word. Before you know it, you’ll notice yourself changing. You’ll find yourself – “Putting on the new self, created to be like God in True Righteousness and Holiness” (Ephesians 4:24). His character will continue to become yours. You’ll begin to think as He does, talk like Him and act like Him. His image will begin to be recognized in you.

My prayer for you today is that you will fall in love with Jesus and then you will become an exact replica of Him.
